Wayang Golek show is form of traditional theatre using wooden puppets called wayang golek. In the context of aesthetic values, wayang show is play filled with a depth of symbolic values. Wayang Golek Ajen derives its power from the values associated with various tokens and symbols within the performances. The performances implement the principles contained in literary works which are the source of the scenarios.

Wayang Golek Ajen puppeteers execute their performances referring to a structured plot in the form of a pattern of scenes, while adding spontaneous embellishments according to the time, place and circumstance. Thus each performance will be a unique presentation of dramatic art. Audiences who enjoy and appreciate the performances are given full freedom to interpret the symbols and feelings brought out in the performance to the widest limits of their imagination.

Wayang Golek Ajen has developed from the classical or traditional form of Wayang Golek Sunda, and well maintains this tradition as its main strength, while in some places tastefully adding new colours to enhance the imaginative powers of the audience.

Wayang Ajen
The term Ajen is taken from Sundanese word ngajenan. Ngajenan means to appreciate, or something which is given respect or appreciation. Wayang Ajen was born from a process of awareness of the younger generation regarding the original traditional Wayang Golek Sunda through creative exploration and novel interpretation by reading traditions in a modern way to produce something different. The structure of a Wayang Golek Sunda performance was recreated along the lines of modern theatre using a dramaturgical conceptual approach. Wayang Golek Ajen later became known as Wayang Ajen. It was created by Wawan Gunawan along with Arthus S. Nalan in 1998, and gave its premiere performance of the scenario ”Kidung Kurusetra” in 1999 during the Wayang Week at Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature (TMII) in Jakarta.

Philosophically, the thinking of Wayang Ajen is based on a process of dialogue among the younger generation who have inherited traditional culture, in which they ngajenan or appreciate/respect each other. Younger generations who have respect for traditional arts consider traditions to be something dynamic, not static, and as a source of inspiration. Wayang Ajen aims to provide an alternative style of performance, especially for the appreciation of the younger generation, wherein we can see our own reflections (ngaji rasa studying our own feelings, and ngaji diri studying our inner self). Thus we hope that there will be ‘enlightenment’ and reflection regarding what and who we really are, and what are our life aspirations in this world.

Wayang Ajen is a contemporary style performance of Wayang Golek which stresses selection of a scenario based upon a written script. Scripts are composed based upon the epics Mahabarata and Ramayana that have been artistically packaged in the form of scenarios containing moral messages which are more actual and contextual, rather than historical. Wayang Ajen is an experimental performance of Wayang Golek Sunda which has been well tried and tested academically, taking advantage of collaboration with various arts media which Ngajenan or respect and complement each other.

Wayang Ajen is performed by the Parwa Pujangga group, which is an arts organization involved in a creative process with a spirit of taking into consideration developments in Wayang Golek Sunda in a combination of cultural potencies towards presentation of Indonesian Wayang on the world stage.

WAYANG AJEN
Istilah Ajen diambil dari Bahasa Sunda yang artinya harga atau nilai. Ngajenan artinya menghargai atau sesuatu yang diberikan penghormatan atau penghargaan. Wayang Ajen lahir dari proses kesadaran generasi muda pada wayang golek Sunda tradisi yang asli dengan eksplorasi kreatif. Wayang ajen lahir dalam tafsir baru, membaca tradisi dengan cara-cara modern sehingga menjadi sesuatu yang berbeda. Penciptaan kembali struktur pertunjukan wayang golek Sunda tradisi disesuaikan dengan format teater modern dengan pendekatan konsep dramaturgi. Wayang golek ajen selanjutnya disebut Wayang Ajen diciptakan oleh Wawan Gunawan bersama Arthur S. Nalan pada tahun 1998, dan pertamakali dipentaskan lakon ”Kidung Kurusetra” pada tahun 1999 dalam acara Pekan Wayang Indonesia di TMII Jakarta.

Secara filosofis dasar pemikiran Wayang Ajen ini di dasarkan dari adanya proses dialogis generasi muda pewaris aktif kesenian tradisional yang saling menghargai. Generasi muda yang memiliki ajen seni tertentu pada tradisi, di mana tradisi dipandang sebagai suatu yang dinamis tidak statis, dan tradisi adalah sumber inspirasi. Wayang Ajen bertujuan memberi alternatif pertunjukan wayang terutama untuk apresiasi bagi generasi muda sebagai tempat bercermin (ngaji rasa dan ngaji diri) sehingga akhirnya diharapkan adanya “pencerahan” dan perenungan tentang apa, siapa, dan mau apa hidup di dunia ini.

Wayang Ajen merupakan pertunjukan wayang golek gaya baru yang menitik beratkan pada pilihan cerita berdasarkan sebuah naskah lakon tertulis. Naskah lakon dibuat bersumber dari Wiracarita Mahabrata atau Ramayana, tetapi merupakan kemasan garapan lakon yang memiliki muatan pesan moral yang lebih aktual dan kontekstual. Wayang Ajen adalah bentuk pergelaran eksperimen kreatif wayang golek Sunda yang digarap secara akademis, dengan memanfaatkan kolaborasi dengan berbagai media seni yang saling Ngajenan atau menghargai dan saling melengkapi.

Wayang Ajen dengan nama grup Parwa Pujangga adalah sebuah wadah seni dalam proses kreatif dengan spirit kreasi dalam menyikapi pengembangan wayang golek Sunda dalam perpaduan potensi kultur menuju bentangan wayang Indonesia yang mendunia.
